Another year, another successful Tax Students conference. Firstly, thank you to all of you who attended. It was a great learning and networking opportunity for all. For those who didn’t have the opportunity to attend, we hope to see you next year! Keep your eyes peeled for details of the 2017 event!

This year, the conference changed format from previous years to provide more chances for students to engage more closely with employers and give ample opportunities for students to make their mark as Tax Professionals for the day.

Kicking off in Cape Town on 13 May 2016 at Belmont Square, and concluding in Johannesburg on 27 May at Emporer’s Palace, the conference included a morning session with CNN style scenario based panel discussions on relevant tax issues. These sessions were presented by key speakers from the main sponsoring employers. These scenario sessions aimed to teach students to  think critically and review information in pursuit of articulating an informed opinion.

The day concluded with the exciting  Tax Professional for a Day Challenge. Each university and/or faculty nominated a top team as representatives. The sponsors set short case studies for the teams to present. The sponsors left for their bread-away rooms and the teams rotated from one sponsor to another, until they have completed all the challenges. The scores were independently calculated and the winning teams were announced. See all the winners here.

The students not competing in the challenge stayed in the seminar room and listened to a highly regarded communications consultant on personal branding and the power of image.

Universities that attended included:

– University of Cape Town (UCT)

– Stellenbosch University (SUN)

– Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT)

– University of Western Cape (UWC)

– Milpark

– Varsity College

– UNISA

– Monash

– University of Johannesburg (UJ)

– University of Pretoria (UP)

– North West University (NWU)

Once again, a  big thank you to our sponsors. Without you, this day would not have been such a success!
